“Creativity is as important as literacy”- Robbins- Ted Talks Conference
Robbins defined creativity as,
“The Process of having original ideas that have value”
In our education system, the foundation phase allows for children to be creative, spending more time on Creative activities such as art, drama and working through play. These activities act as a medium in which children can channel their creativity. Developing skills outside of the classroom and coming up with original ideas. From the video, after the foundation phase is complete the national curriculum starts to take more of a negative approach to creativity, limiting children’s ideas and “Killing Creativity.”
The curriculum focuses a lot more on core subjects such as Maths, Language and Science. This is the same all over the world, the idea of a clever person all around the world is a college professor, or a scientist. But as humans that’s not what we should hold as the highest indicator of intelligence. People are clever or talented in many different areas, some that cannot be discovered inside the classroom. To truly develop pupils as people and not just as brains the curriculum needs to be more creative.
